WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — U.S. Sen. Richard Burr announced Monday that his father, David Burr, has died after a short period of declining health.

David Burr served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem for more than 25 years.

He was educated at the University of Wisconsin and Princeton Theological Seminary and received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Davidson College. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 after his junior year at Princeton and served in a frogman unit in the Pacific during World War II.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane in Winston-Salem, in care of the David Burr Memorial Fund.
