Durham street repairs on ballot
Voters in Durham will decide next week whether the city can borrow $20 million to repair about 150 miles of streets.
Posted — UpdatedAbout 600 miles of streets in Durham are maintained by the city, and a survey several years ago found that almost half of them were in poor or very poor condition, Mayor Bill Bell said.
A bond referendum in 2005 allowed the city to repair about 110 miles of streets, and Bell said officials hope voters approve the new bond so the city can finish the job.
Two-thirds of Durham residents respond in city surveys that well-maintained streets are important, he said.
Borrowing the money might add a penny to Durham's tax rate, Bell said, which amounts to about $12 a year to the annual tax bill for a $150,000 home.
