RALEIGH, N.C. — House Majority Leader Hugh Holliman was recovering Tuesday after undergoing surgery to remove a portion of one of his lungs, officials said.

The surgery was done at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem. Holliman is recovering in the hospital’s intensive care unit and is expected to return to his legislative duties in about a week, officials said.

Surgeons removed a lower lobe of Holliman’s right lung as a precautionary measure, and the area wasn't immediately believed to be cancerous, officials said.

A two-time survivor of lung cancer, Holiman was the primary sponsor of the new state law banning smoking in restaurants and bars.
