FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Fort Bragg paid tribute Thursday to 30 Army Special Operations soldiers who have died in the past year in the war on terrorism.

"These are men who responded to a different voice," Lt. Gen. John Mulholland, of the Army Special Operations Command, said.

The names were added to a redesigned Fallen Special Operations Soldier Memorial Wall at Fort Bragg that is in tribute to more than 1,100 Army Special Operations soldiers since the Vietnam War.

Among them was Capt. Jason Holbrook, 28, who died July 29 in Afghanistan while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group.

Holbrook's father-in-law, John Harper, placed a rose by the wall.

"Jason was a father-in-law's dream come true," he said.

Another soldier honored was Sgt. Andrew Creighton, a 23-year-old signal intelligence specialist who died on July 4 in the Oruzgan province of Afghanistan while serving with 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group.

Creighton's mother, Rebecca Wolter, said seeing all of the soldiers' family members at the ceremony was difficult.

"To me, that makes the tragedy bigger, more profound," Wolter said.

Former presidential candidate Ross Perot, actor Gary Sinise and others attended the ceremony. They declined interviews, saying the real stars are those on the wall.

More than 300 Special Operations soldiers have died in combat since 2001.
