RALEIGH, N.C. — More than 100 Raleigh police officers were promoted Thursday during the largest promotion ceremony in the department’s history.

One officer rose to the rank of captain, while 21 became lieutenants, 49 sergeants and 40 detectives.

The promotions capped off a three-year restructuring plan put in place by Chief Harry Dolan, who joined the department in August 2007.

Dolan said the promotions better positions the department to serve the community.

"We're strengthening the command. We're strengthening the leadership, but also most importantly are putting emphasis on making sure the officers are trained and ready to do while the others become promoted," he said.

Up until this point, supervisors were pulling double duty.
