Thousands register for Angel Tree gifts
The Wake County Salvation Army has about 1,500 more applications for its annual Angel Tree program this year compared to 2009, said Haven Sink, Salvation Army director of public relations.
Posted — UpdatedSink estimated that about 25 percent of the 7,000-plus children registered to receive Christmas gifts come from families who have not sought aid in the past.
About 5,000 children got gifts from the Angel Tree last year, Sink said.
Each year, sponsors place Angel Trees in high-traffic areas in their communities, organizations and offices. Contributors remove one or more tags from the tree and purchase appropriate gifts for the child or children described on the tags.
Last year, the Salvation Army had to go out and purchase toys at the last minute, because they were running low and corporate donations were down because of the economy. This year, they hope to meet the growing need.
Applicants must show some form of identification and proof that they have children and live in Wake County. There are no income requirements or proof of citizenship. In-person applications have closed, but families can still request help by calling the Salvation Army at 919-834-6733.
