Laurinburg names bridge after trooper killed in action

State and local officials gathered in Laurinburg Thursday for the long-overdue honor of a member of the Highway Patrol killed in the line of duty.
Alphonso J. Hedgepeth, 27, had only been a patrolman for a few months before he died during a high-speed pursuit on Oct. 23, 1931. The N.C. Department of Transportation named the bridges where the U.S. Highway 74 Bypass crossed U.S. 15/401 in Laurinburg the Patrolman A.J. Hedgepeth Bridge.
Hedgepeth was only the second member of the Highway Patrol to die in the line of duty.
