Wake County rescue team shares expertise overseas
The Wake County-based Rescue Extrication Delivery Specialists team will help small villages in Guatemala hit hard by flooding during a hurricane and a tropical storm this spring.
Posted — UpdatedThe REDS team will spend nine days teaching local rescue crews how to handle road and vehicle emergencies.
"I'll be helping coordinate major training events," REDS team member Aaron Hair said. "I'll be the liaison between the team and the representatives from their government."
The team will also bring welcome donations that it has collected: a fire truck, an ambulance and more than 60 sets of fire gear, helmets, boots and gloves.
REDS is a self-supporting, volunteer-run nonprofit that is recognized by Wake County but not affiliated with any government. It assists in rescue operations across the state and provides training for law enforcement, medical emergency personnel, military and companies.
