Diocese of Raleigh looks at expansion
The Catholic Diocese of Raleigh has added so many members over the last decade that leaders are considering building a new cathedral.
Posted — UpdatedBishop Michael Burbidge on Monday asked Graham-Pelton Consulting to investigate whether a building project would be feasible. The study should be finished by June.
The number of registered Catholics in the Diocese of Raleigh has grown by 42 percent in the last 10 years -- from 152,493 to 217,125.
At Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in downtown Raleigh, registrations almost doubled in ten years. The cathedral had 5,871 registered parishioners in 2009.
In considering a building project, the diocese noted in a statement that Sacred Heart seats only 320 people, has no bathroom facilities, very limited parking and very limited handicap access.
