Wake Forest police chief to retire
Wake Forest Police Chief Greg Harrington will retire Thursday after more than 16 years in charge of the department.

An Elizabeth City native, Harrington started his career as an officer in the Hertford Police Department and later served in the Scotland Neck Police Department and the Roanoke Rapids Police Department before becoming police chief in Weldon. He was named Wake Forest police chief in October 1993.
During his tenure, Wake Forest has grown from 6,800 residents to more than 27,000, and the department has gone from 14 to 54 officers in that time.
Deputy Police Chief Jeff Leonard has been named acting police chief, effective Friday.
