Raleigh City Council approves energy efficiency projects
The Raleigh City Council voted Tuesday to approve a list of energy efficiency and conservation projects and programs.
Posted — UpdatedTo pay for the improvements, the City of Raleigh is eligible to receive a $3.82 million Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The City of Raleigh’s list of energy efficiency and conservation projects and programs covers six areas:
- Climate action plan, $200,000;
- Climate action plan implementation projects, $2.5 million;
- Weatherization program, $400,000;
- Residential and commercial energy efficiency and renewables loan program, $400,000. The City Council voted to endorse a bill in the N.C. House of Representatives that would allow municipalities to grant the loans;
- Green Builders certification program, $160,000; and,
- City sustainability training and education programs, $160,000.
The purpose of EECBG program is to provide federal grants to local governments to reduce energy use and fossil fuel emissions and improve energy efficiency.
The City of Raleigh plans to submit its EECBG application to the Department of Energy by June 25.
