Perdue's bet benefits food bank

A wager Gov. Beverly Perdue made on the University of North Carolina basketball team has benefited the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A wager Gov. Beverly Perdue made on the University of North Carolina basketball team has benefited the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.

Perdue won her March 27 bet with Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire when the Tar Heels beat Gonzaga University in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. She won 75 pounds of Washington potatoes, which she donated to the food bank.

“We are grateful to receive the potatoes. For us, this means about 84 people will have a meal consisting of fresh, nutritious white potatoes,” Peter Werbicki, president and chief executive of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, said in a statement.

Perdue also has bet Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm as UNC plays Michigan State for the national championship Monday night. The losing governor will have to donate $100 to a local food bank, sample food from the winning state and be photographed wearing a shirt and hat of the winning team.
