FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — More than 700 people attended the Cumberland County Teacher Job Fair on Saturday, organizers said.

Attendance doubled from the previous year. Associate Superintendent of Human Resources for Cumberland County Schools Joseph Locklear attributed the large turnout to the economic situation and the lack of budget money available for other school systems to hire.

Candidates applied for 140 available positions, which were mainly pre-existing spots that are now open due to expiring contracts or teachers retiring.

All teachers whose contracts are expiring were required to reapply at Saturday’s fair, held at the Holiday Inn, 1944 Cedar Creek Road.

Locklear said the school district was very pleased with the turn-out and the high quality of candidates.
