Duke's El Greco exhibit named in country's top 10

The Nasher Museum of Art's show of works by El Greco and other Spanish Old Masters came in at No. 3 on the list. The works date to the early 1600s, when Spain's empire was at its peak.

An exhibit of conceptual art at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and of a 19th-century French painter at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art were ranked first and second, respectively.

The El Greco exhibit drew about 73,000 visitors and racked up $462,000 in ticket sales. It is credited in raising an estimated $183,000 in local tax revenue.

The $2 million exhibit was one of the most important shows of its kind ever presented in the southeast, university officials said.
