Sculptures honor Durham's 'Black Wall Street'
Durham officials on Wednesday unveiled three sculptures on Parrish Street downtown to honor the legacy of economic achievement and opportunity created a century ago by black entrepreneurs.

DURHAM, N.C. — Local officials on Wednesday unveiled three sculptures on Parrish Street downtown to honor the legacy of economic achievement and opportunity created a century ago by black entrepreneurs.
North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co. and Mechanics & Farmers Bank were successful black-owned businesses that were located on Parrish Street in the early 1900s, giving rise to the moniker "Black Wall Street."
Six sculptures will eventually be dedicated along the street to highlight the city's tobacco, retail, manufacturing and transportation industries and the role black entrepreneurs played.
