Hay Street United Methodist Church this weekend celebrates 200 years of Methodism in Fayetteville.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Hay Street United Methodist Church this weekend celebrates 200 years of Methodism in Fayetteville.

On Saturday, the church rang its bell 200 times to mark its history in the area.

The church was accepted into the South Carolina District of Methodist Church in 1808.

The church’s founder was Henry Evans, a free black shoemaker. Evans helped build the original church building on Cool Spring Street. The church moved to its location at 320 Hay Street after the great Fayetteville fire of 1831.

The congregation held a tribute to Evans, who died in 1810, on Saturday.

On Sunday a celebratory worship service will be held starting at 10:30 a.m. at the church.
