Masonboro Island land designated for preservation

The state has purchased 23.3 acres on Masonboro Island for preservation, paying private land owners almost $90,000.

MASONBORO ISLAND, N.C. — The state has purchased 23.3 acres on Masonboro Island for preservation, paying private land owners almost $90,000.

The land will be added to the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve.

“Our reserve program is dedicated to preserving coastal natural areas for education, research and compatible recreation," said Jim Gregson, director of the N.C. Division of Coastal Management.
