Family sets up legacy fund for 'Southern Sportsman'
The family of a Hookerton man who produced and hosted "The Southern Sportsman" for more than two decades has set up a fund to preserve his legacy and love of wildlife.
Posted — UpdatedHOOKERTON, N.C. — The family of a Hookerton man who produced and hosted "The Southern Sportsman" for more than two decades has set up a fund to preserve his legacy and love of wildlife.
Franc White, 85, died June 6. He was an expert outdoor sportsman, writer and conservationist.
After his death, White's family started a fund to benefit the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, an organization he supported throughout his life. In 1966, the federation named him Conservation Educator of the Year.
"The Southern Sportsman" ran on WRAL-TV from 1972 to 1996.
White requested that his family not hold a funeral or memorial for him. Instead, he wanted his ashes, along with those of his dog, to be strewn in the Linville River so that the sporting fish he caught throughout his career "can get even," his family said.
