Unexpected state funding could mean $4M extra for Wake schools

RALEIGH, N.C. — A state budget proposal being considered in the North Carolina House Tuesday could provide $8.4 million in unexpected funding for the Wake County Public School System, creating a $4 million surplus for the district.

State lawmakers have tentatively decided to cancel some reductions in education funding, which the school system had planned for when it approved a $1.25 billion budget last month.

House and Senate budget writers are expected to finalize a budget deal Tuesday night. A vote is expected Thursday.

The school district's approved budget, which might have to be tweaked once the state budget is finalized, counted on $8.8 million in additional funding from the Wake County Board of Commissioners.

The commissioners voted Monday to provide $3.9 million in additional funding to county schools. Though that was less than the district requested, the extra state funding would create a net $4 million increase..

The school board must adopt a final balanced budget no later than June 30.
