DURHAM, N.C. — Durham school leaders want lawmakers to reconsider parts of a bill that would lift the cap on charter schools in the state.

The school board passed a resolution on Wednesday asking lawmakers to revise how charter schools would be funded.

Leaders say under the bill charters would be entitled to money for services they don't provide and additional money like grants.

Durham schools Superintendent Eric Becoats said the district is not against charter schools or lifting the cap on them. However, he's concerned that charters could drain resources from public schools.

“We do think there needs to be a level playing field when you are talking about people or charter schools being able to access certain resources,” Becoats said.

Durham school leaders say they are also concerned there is no minimum number of students required to start a charter school.
