Even moreso than in fiction, professors and other professionals run the gamut in our great state, so nonfiction crosses into many different subjects of expertise. Here’s a selection of NC authors with books based in fact coming out through April:

Soul City

In 1969, with America’s inner cities in turmoil and racial tensions high, civil rights leader Floyd McKissick announced a plan to build a new city in rural North Carolina, intended primarily to benefit black people. Soul City received funding from the federal government and was rapidly growing. But the utopian vision was not to be, as Soul City was battered from the left and the right, causing its bankruptcy in 1979. Thomas Healy, a native of NC, resurrects this forgotten saga of race, capitalism, and the struggle for equality. Was it an impossible, misbegotten dream from the beginning? Or a brilliant idea thwarted by prejudice and bad timing? And how might history have turned out if Soul City had been allowed to succeed?

Part hiking guide and part photography collection, this book contains wonderful stories about the history and folklore of the lookouts and their fire lookout inhabitants, a detailed guide of hikes to each, and details about the views at the top.

Burton Craig Distinguished Professor of Jurisprudence at the UNC Chapel Hill, Michael J. Gerhardt reveals how a group of five men, some of whom Lincoln had never met but some he knew intimately—Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, Zachary Taylor, John Todd Stuart, and Orville Browning—mentored an obscure lawyer with no executive experience to become American’s greatest leader, teaching him, among many other things, how to develop policies and rhetoric to match a constitutional vision that spoke to the monumental challenges of his time.
