LILLINGTON, N.C. — A shift in power in the Harnett County Board of Commissioners on Monday resulted in the firing of County Manager Scott Sauer.

New Commissioner Gordon Springle joined with Commissioners Jim Burgin and Gary House in a 3-2 vote to oust Sauer, who has overseen county operations for almost four years. Commissioners Beatrice Hill and Joe Miller voted against the move.

County Planning Director Joseph Jeffries has been named as interim county manager.

Earlier this year, the board voted to extend Sauer's contract through 2019 and to increase his severance pay from six months to a year if he were terminated.
