WILMINGTON, N.C. — A Wilmington woman has been charged with trying to kill her son in a Nov. 30 shooting incident at his home, New Hanover County officials said Thursday.

Elisabeth Buckles Bello faces one count each of attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

According to investigators, Bello tried to shoot her son during a visit to his home on Pond Drive. Thomas Bello told police that he heard a loud pop while talking with his mother and turned around to see her pointing a handgun at him.

The pair struggled, and the gun went off again. Authorities said Thomas Bello struggled with his mother before taking the gun and hiding it in a closet inside his home.

Thomas Bello sustained gunshot wounds to his right shoulder and left hand, authorities said. He was treated and released from Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Elisabeth Bello was arrested shortly after and taken to the hospital because investigators said she was incoherent.

Bello was charged Wednesday and released from the New Hanover County jail after posting a $100,000 secured bond.
