RALEIGH, N.C. — When Kirk McAbee missed his son's birthday party, his family knew something was wrong. That was more than six years ago, and they haven't seen him since.

“Nobody just disappears off the face of the earth. Someone had to have heard something,” his mother Cindy McAbee said.

His mother became concerned about her 31-year-old son when he missed his son's birthday party in May of 2010.

“Never, ever in a hundred million year would he have missed that,” she said.

Kirk McAbee disappeared on May 23. His estranged wife found his car at his house on Saddle Drive.

“The key was still in the ignition, and a large amount of cash was left inside the car in the console,” said Lieutenant Stan Harris of the Durham County Sheriff’s office.

Search warrants show McAbee was caught up in the drug trade and had a long rap sheet. Wherever he is, he’s not there by choice. Investigators want to talk with his friend and business associate, Armando Reyna-Soto.

“They were, from what we’re gathering, good friends,” Harris said.

Soto worked with McAbee, when McAbee owned Hollywood Dry Cleaners on Guess Road.

“He’s actually a good friend of the family, of everybody. We all knew him and thought very highly of him,” Cindy McAbee said.

McAbee's brother, Thomas, posted a YouTube video about his brother.

“If you see my brother’s face, and you recognize him, if you know where he is, if you know what happened to him, please call the Durham County Sheriff’s Department at the number of the back of my shirt,” Thomas McAbee said.

Anyone with information is asked to call 1-866-439-2683.
