NC Wanted: Search continues for clues in Cumberland County hit-and-run

Woodford Gasque was hit by a car in Cumberland County in 2014 suffering horrific injuries.

Gasque spent the next several months, in excruciating pain, enduring endless surgeries, until his body gave out.

It was Sept. 1, 2014, when Gasque was riding his moped on Butler Nursery Road, south of Fayetteville, when a car cut him off and kept going.

“She just kept going,” said Helen Hunt, Gasque’s sister. “She hit him and kept going.”

Hunt was supposed to meet Gasque for breakfast that morning, but instead spent the next several months watching him struggle to recover.

“They had to amputate one of his legs,” Hunt said “The doctors are 90 percent sure he’s going to be paralyzed.”

Gasque suffered two broken legs, a broken back and a spinal injury.

Tow truck operator John Savage said he remembers the morning he was called to the scene to pick up Gasque’s moped.

“The gentleman had his vest on; he was wearing a helmet,” Savage said. “He was in compliance with the state about riding this scooter. The person that hit him just hit him and kept going.”

A witness reported seeing a woman driving a burgundy or red Dodge Neon or Toyota Corolla.

“They think he was hit and thrown up, and then came back down on the car,” Hunt said.

Family members say they look forward to an arrest in the case.

Gasque died in June at the age of 60 due to complications from his injuries.
