MANSON, N.C. — Joseph Mayfield lived in the small town of Manson in Warren County, where he planned to live out his days. Instead, the retired textile worker met a violent end on Oct. 7, 2006.

Police found Mayfield, 73, dead and slumped over a chair in his kitchen after being shot in the stomach. Authorities said his killers have never been located.

Mayfield’s Cadillac and pickup truck were in the yard, clothes were on the line outside, but there were no obvious signs that murder had been committed.

“It appears that Mr. Mayfield let them in,” said Warren County Sheriff, Johnny Williams. “Something happened after he let the in to cause his death.”

Jeannie Mayfield had been separated from her husband for several years, but the two remained friends.

“It was quite a shock to all of us,” she said. “You know, if he had been sick it would have been one thing, but to just die suddenly; it was quite a shock.”

Joseph Mayfield’s murder was the eighth for Warren County.
