NC Field of Honor salutes soldiers and veterans
Hundreds of flags were flying in downtown Fayetteville Saturday as a living display of heroism and a patriotic tribute to the strength and unity of Americans.
Posted — UpdatedEach flag was placed on the grounds of the Airborne and Special Operations Museum in honor of someone who has served or are currently serving in the military.
"The symbol, the stars and stripes, is a powerful motivation for those who believe in a higher calling," said Maj. Gen. James Linder.
Each flag comes with its own story and displays a tag identifying the person who sponsored the flag and the flag honoree.
Major Ivan Castro lost his sight while on duty in Iraq, but said he can still see the beauty in his 3-year-old daughter.
"Every time she sees me she asks me, 'daddy, you got a big boo boo, why you got a big boo boo,' yeah, daddy was in the war and he has a big boo boo," Castro said.
Terry Coleman and her family have six flags in the Field of Honor, including one for her grandfather.
"My grandfather passed in 2006, so this just brings us joy every year to be able to come out and see this," Coleman said.
The more than 800 flags will stand at attention through June 27.
