RALEIGH, N.C. — Some local chefs and restaurants have been named finalists for James Beard Foundation awards.

The awards are often referred to as "The Oscars of Food," and the Triangle has a legacy of taking home honors. Semi-finalists were named last month.

Despite many being named semi-finalists, only one North Carolina chef was named a finalist for Best Chef in the Southeast - John Fleer of Rhubarb in Asheville.
Kinston's own Vivian Howard, co-owner of the Chef and the Farmer, was named a finalist for best TV host. Her PBS show "A Chef's Life" has been nominated in the TV category for best show and visual and technical excellence. The documentary series focuses on eastern North Carolina cuisine and where it comes from.

The winners will be announced during a gala at Lyric Opera of Chicago in New York City on May 4.
