Navy exercises likely source of boom heard off Outer Banks

Posted — UpdatedKITTY HAWK, N.C. — The sound that rocked the night along the Outer Banks Tuesday was likely a sonic boom from Navy aircraft training over Dare County, a Coast Guard spokesman said.
Residents, visitors and media along the Dare County coast reported hearing a loud boom just before 9 p.m. Some said it literally shook windows.
The Coast Guard checked with offshore vessels in the area and none reported any crash or explosions.
