Natural sciences museum launches new program for teens

The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences is starting a new program for teens who are interested in sharing science and the natural world with visitors to the downtown Raleigh museum.

The Junior Volunteers program is open to all teens ages 14 to 18 who can commit to two shifts per month during a four- to five-month session. The museum is accepting applications for the spring session, which runs January to May. The deadline is coming up. It's 5 p.m., Nov. 6.

"I’m really excited about getting this program started," Kathryn Fromson, curator of youth programs, tells me. "It will offer teens a great avenue for contributing to the museum and will enhance the visitor experience for folks who interact with our Junior Volunteers."

Volunteers start in Visitor Services, working on the museum floor to assist and engage visitors. After volunteers have completed hourly requirements, they can request placement in a specialized area such as the Investigate Labs or the Windows on the World. Experienced volunteers can try out different placements, remain in one area to become a mentor to new volunteers, or focus on a project of their own design.
