Animals at the N.C. Zoo will get some special treats this weekend as part of the Asheboro destination's annual Egg-Stravaganza.

In several animal exhibits, zoo keepers will place paper-mâché eggs that were made by zoo volunteers and filled with food treats and other enrichment items, a press release says. The keepers will be on hand to answer visitor questions.

It runs Saturday and Sunday. The schedule includes: elephants, 10 a.m.; polar bears, 10:30 a.m.; bobcats 10:30 a.m.; red river hogs, 11 a.m.; seals, 11:30 a.m.; seabirds, 11:30 a.m.; black bear, 11:45 a.m.; grizzly bear, 1:15 p.m.; chimpanzees, 2 p.m.; baboons, 2 p.m.; lemurs 2:30 p.m.; and cougars at 2:30 p.m.

A special display of bird eggs will be on view at the R.J. Reynolds Forest Aviary from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The activities are part of the zoo's ongoing program to bring mental and physical stimulation to the animals and give them a chance to play and explore tastes and smells.

The zoo switched over to its summer hours on April 1 when admission prices also increased a bit. It's about 90 minutes from the Triangle.
