RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Museum of History has asked Raleigh and Wake County officials for $3 million in hotel and restaurant taxes to help pay for a new exhibit.

The $15 million "History of North Carolina" exhibit would focus on aspects of the state's role in events like the Revolutionary War and the Great Depression and fields like aviation and tobacco cultivation.

The museum has already received state money for the project and has raised money from donations.

Museum officials argue that the museum is a strong economic engine downtown and that investment by local government would be paid back as more and more people visit. Nearly 330,000 people visit the history museum every year.
