N.C. drunken-driving fatalities dropped in 2008
The number of people killed statewide in drunken-driving wrecks dropped by 12.5 percent last year, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said Monday.
Posted — UpdatedIn 2007, North Carolina had 497 alcohol-related traffic fatalities, or 0.48 per 100 million vehicle-miles traveled, according to an NHTSA report. Last year, there were 423 alcohol-related traffic fatalities statewide, or 0.42 per 100 million vehicle-miles traveled.
The number of total traffic fatalities also declined in North Carolina last year, from 1,676 to 1,433, according to the report.
Thirty-nine other states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico also reported fewer drunken-driving fatalities last year. The national average of impaired driving fatalities dropped by 10 percent.
