Murder-suicide leaves two dead in Roanoke Rapids

Roanoke Rapids police believe that a man shot his girlfriend, then turned the gun on himself, killing them both, in the 800 block of Franklin Street Thursday afternoon.

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Roanoke Rapids police believe that a man shot his girlfriend, then turned the gun on himself in a murder-suicide Friday afternoon.

Police Chief Jeff Hinton said that 911 callers reported a domestic situation in a residential area in the 800 block of Franklin Street around 4 p.m. Officers found a man and woman with gunshot wounds in the street.

Hinton said the man was dead at the scene, and the woman was pronounced dead at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Their names were not released, pending notification of family.
