PINEHURST, N.C. — Murder charges have been filed against a Carthage man in connection with a police chase in Pinehurst last month that ended in a fatal crash.

Patrick Hayes McKinney, 25, faces two counts of second-degree murder as well as a slew of traffic-related offenses: failure to heed a blue light or siren, driving left of center, aggressive driving, speeding, reckless driving to endanger, failure to reduce speed, driving with a revoked license and eluding arrest in a motor vehicle causing death.

The charges stem from an April 24 wreck on Juniper Lake Road, near U.S. Highway 15/501, that killed Lashonda Belk, 29, of Carthage, and Gregory Harris, 28, of Aberdeen.

Police said Belk and Harris were passengers in McKinney's car, which police tried to stop after it ran a four-way stop sign at the intersection of McKenzie and Rassie Wicker roads. The car sped off after an officer pulled it over and then approached the car, police said.

Police have said they believe an outstanding arrest warrant against McKinney on a violation of a restraining order might have played a role in his decision to flee.

McKinney was taken into custody Tuesday following his release from UNC Hospitals. He is being held without bond in the Moore County jail.
