FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police are asking for the public’s help in deterring motor vehicle break-ins.

They said Tuesday that 99 vehicle break-ins had been reported so far this month. Some of the incidents counted as break-ins were the result people leaving vehicles unlocked, they said.

Police have adopted two programs aimed at preventing vehicle break-ins and thefts. The Park Smart program reminds people to lock their doors and remove valuables from their cars.

Residents may also register for the A.T.A.C. (Auto Theft Action Campaign) at the Fayetteville Police Department. An A.T.A.C. decal gives officers permission to stop a vehicle between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. to verify ownership.

For information on auto-theft prevention or to register for A.T.A.C., call the Crime Prevention Unit at 910-433-1033.
