Mother charged in infant's death

Police on Friday charged a Goldsboro woman in the death of her 6-month-old daughter last week.

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Police on Friday charged a Goldsboro woman in the death of her 6-month-old daughter last week.

Doniesha Elouise Core, 21, of 313 Randall Lane, Apt. D, was charged with negligent child abuse with serious bodily injury. She was being held in the Wayne County Jail under a $15,000 secured bond.

Diamond Nicole Smith died a week ago in the pediatric intensive care unit at Pitt Memorial Hospital, in Greenville, two days after she was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital with fractured ribs and bleeding on the brain, police said.

Police said the cause of death was an abusive head injury.

The girl's father, Ronald Everette Smith, 24, of 117 Hines Drive, Lot 8, was charged Tuesday with murder in the case. He is being held without bond in the Wayne County Jail.
