More heat, humidity on tap for the week

The high Monday was expected to reach 93 degrees in Raleigh and 95 degrees in Fayetteville. The mercury will fall back into the mid-80s by 8 p.m.

"The heat is bad enough, but now we're starting to feel it in the form of additional moisture," WRAL meteorologist Nate Johnson said.

The dewpoint around the region Monday was in the upper 60s or low 70s, which Johnson said qualifies as "legitimately muggy air."

High temperatures were expected to be in the mid to upper 90s through the end of the week, with the heat index topping 100.

“All those usual precautions will begin to apply this week,” WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said. “Light, loose clothing, plenty of water and, of course, taking breaks and finding shade if you can.”

Johnson said the hot, humid weather sets the stage for afternoon storms.

"We're going to be counting on the combination of heat, humidity and terrain to get some showers and thunderstorms going," Johnson said.

The best chance for storms Monday was in the Triad region, but chances begin to increase across the Triangle and Sandhills on Tuesday, he said.
