Moore schools deputy superintendent leaving

Bergin, who has served in the post since July 2012, is leaving to become the chief of staff with Virignia Beach City Schools. His resignation is effective July 1.

"Marc shared with me his desire to return to Virginia many months ago, and I've been pleased to support him during his job search," Superintendent Robert Grimesey said in a statement. "He has done much to forward the quality of education in Moore County Schools during his tenure, and he'll be missed."

Grimesey was back at work Tuesday after a contentious week in which he was fired, then reinstated by the Board of Education.

Despite opposition from parents, the board voted 5-3 on Thursday to dismiss Grimesey for undisclosed reasons. Then the board voted 4-1 on Monday to rehire him. He took back his job with a standing ovation from supporters who packed the school board meeting.

Four of the five board members who voted to fire him have since resigned.

Bergin said in a statement he's been pleased to support Grimesey since he arrived in Moore County last year.

"I am excited to return to my home state of Virginia and the challenges ahead with my new position," he said.

Bergin holds a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of Notre Dame, a master's in elementary education from Butler University and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He has 24 years of experience as an elementary school teacher, principal and administrator.

Bergin is married with two sons.
