MOORE COUNTY, N.C. — At least 38 employees of the Moore County school system could be facing layoffs, a district spokesman said Friday.

Superintendent Susan Purser is expected to cut 5 percent of the work force, or about 90 positions, by July 1. About 50 of those positions are currently unfilled, Tim Lussier, school district spokesman, said.

Everyone from teachers to custodians to administrators could be affected, Lussier said.

The district is reducing head count in anticipation of fewer but larger classrooms. Both the state House and Senate are considering budgets which would allow two more students per classroom in North Carolina.
