The smallest sections of the state budget – Justice and Public Safety, Natural and Economic Resources and General Government – have pretty much ben worked out, according to Sen. Harry Brown, R-Onslow. However, lawmakers still have a lot of work to do on Health and Human Services and Education, which together comprise the bulk of state spending every year.
Otherwise, not much happened at the legislature Monday.
Down the street, the state Supreme Court heard arguments for a second time over the congressional and legislative voting maps that lawmakers drew up four years ago. The court ruled in favor of the maps last December, but the U.S. Supreme Court vacated that ruling in April and asked the state court to take a second look at the maps in light of a Supreme Court ruling in a similar case out of Alabama.
