PITTSBORO, N.C. — A Chatham County woman was charged Thursday after her daughter took a loaded gun to school, authorities said.

The 10-year-old had the .45-caliber handgun in her bookbag before classes at North Chatham School, authorities said. There is no evidence that she took the weapon to school to harm anyone, they said.

Still, a Chatham County Sheriff's Office school resource officer and school administrators met with the family and took appropriate disciplinary action, authorities said.

Her mother, Idre Tania Moreno, 28, of 219 Highland Drive North in Chapel Hill, was charged with misdemeanor failure to secure firearms.
