HENRICO, N.C. — Rescuers found the body of a missing Va. man underneath his boat on Lake Gaston late Saturday morning, officials said.

John Scruggs, 57, was last seen leaving the dock of his vacation home on Pineview Drive around 1 p.m. Friday, said Butch Garnett, commander of the Roanoke Wildwood Fire Department. Scruggs was in a white, 19-foot 1979 Mastercraft ski boat, with a red stripe and white stars.

No one was in the boat with him, Garnett said.

Friends coming down for the weekend reported Scruggs missing around 1 a.m. Saturday. The Warrenton Volunteer Fire Department began the search and was joined by agencies from Northampton, Warren and Halifax counties. A state Highway Patrol helicopter also helped.

Crews found Scruggs's boat near his house while searching a 20-mile stretch of water in the late morning. Scruggs's body was found underneath the boat.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has taken over the investigation.
