SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A 79-year-old Virginia man who had gone missing died in a wreck on Interstate 95 early Saturday, state troopers said.

A Mercedes struck the man's Honda SUV when it was stopped in a southbound lane of I-95, near Brogden Road, south of Smithfield around 1 a.m., troopers said.

The man, whose name wasn't released, was taken to WakeMed, where he died. Three occupants of the Mercedes were also taken to WakeMed, including a 49-year-old woman who had serious injuries.

Troopers said the 79-year-old man, who had dementia, was just sitting in the highway with his headlights on. He had been reported missing in northern Virginia about six hours earlier.
