Minister accused of embezzling from Siler City church

A Chatham County man is accused of stealing money from his church.

SILER CITY, N.C. — A Chatham County man is accused of stealing money from his church.

Johnnie Ray Lewis, 55, of 546 Roscoe Road in Bear Creek, was arrested Thursday on felonious embezzlement charges.

Lewis was employed as a pastor at the Lighthouse Baptist Church of Siler City. He is accused of misappropriating $22,200 of church money for a cabinet project, detectives said.

Lewis was released from jail under a $3,000 unsecured bond. He is scheduled to appear at the Pittsboro courthouse on Sept. 14.
