Meals on Wheels needs money, volunteers to help with mission
Meals on Wheels of Wake County says there are hundreds of seniors on a waiting list for meal delivery.
Posted — UpdatedRALEIGH, N.C. — A Triangle organization that provides meals to home-bound seniors is asking for help during the holidays. Meals on Wheels of Wake County says there are hundreds of seniors on a waiting list for meal delivery.
All together, volunteers visit 1,300 people each day across the county, delivering more than just a prepared meal.
Jeremy Muncert, a retired U.S. Army sergant, is now a member of that army of volunteers. He was injured and spent years in a wheelchair but upon his recovery knew he wanted to help others.
“I want to continue being a good solider, be a good civilian, you know? Pay it forward,” Muncert said.
He spends two days a week delivering meals and a visit, and he sees how many more seniors could use the same service.
"They are grandparents. They are veterans. They are people who really have contributed a lot to the community. This is our way of thanking them for what they’ve done before and just making their life a little bit better," said Alan Winstead, executive director of Meals on Wheels of Wake County.
The organization needs donations of both money and time, Winstead said. With a lengthy waiting list, Wake County could serve 200 more seniors immediately with the proper funding.
