McCrory accepts GOP's nomination for re-election

McCrory mentioned North Carolina’s condition prior to his election on Saturday, comparing it to where the state currently stands.

“North Carolina had the fifth-highest unemployment rate in the country,” he said. “We owed $2.6 billion to the federal government; [We] lowered corporate taxes, lower income taxes. We’ve made the most substantial pay increases for teaches throughout North Carolina that we’ve seen in 20 years.”

McCrory also took a jab at his democratic opponent, Roy Cooper, calling into question Cooper’s commitment to his position as attorney general.

“Now a lot of people say that I’m running against the attorney general,” McCrory said. “Wrong; we haven’t had an attorney general in North Carolina for several years.”

Cooper has openly opposed the state’s anti-discrimination law, House Bill 2, stating that the law provides broad-based discrimination and targets the LBGT community.

Cooper said his office would not defend the law in any court challenge. McCrory said Cooper has rejected common sense.

“We didn’t have an attorney general who would defend common sense privacy laws in our restrooms or locker rooms or shower facilities in our government buildings, universities or schools,” McCrory said. “He’s not lifting a finger to help us out.”

A recent survey conducted by Survey USA for WRAL News found that McCrory is trailing Cooper, 43 to 47 percent.

McCrory said super PACs that support Cooper are spending millions and that it’s time for his supports to rally.

“Ladies and gentleman, we’ve got to start our own grass roots organization to get our message out about the success we’ve had,” McCrory said.
