Members of a church in Orange County were in Haiti when Hurricane Matthew wreaked havoc on the country earlier this week. Church leaders said the group could not get out in time

Four members from Ebenezer Baptist Church in Hillsborough went to Haiti as part of an annual mission trip.

"We have plans of how things are going to look and things that we're planning on doing but when you get there, very often it's a little different than what you thought," said Currie Tilley. "So when something like this happens, it's a lot different."

Instead of construction, the group is now joining others distributing food to hurricane victims out of Port-Au-Prince.

"They are able to minister to people in a way that maybe they weren't planning on when they went," she said.

At the end of the day, volunteers, like the group from Hillsborough, understand even the basics are sometimes not enough..

"When a storm comes, that's really when people are really in need and open for hope and we really feel like our team is offering hope," Tilley said.
