Man, woman found dead in Garner home

A man called 911 at about 10:30 a.m. and told the dispatcher he had killed someone. Communications staff were able to link the call to a home on Whithorne Drive, off Woods Creek Drive, in Garner, said Sgt. Chris Clayton of the Garner Police Department.

When officers arrived, no one answered, so they entered the house and found the bodies of a man and a woman inside, Clayton said. No one else was in the home, he said.

The names of the victims were being withheld Thursday, pending notification of relatives.

The cause of death hadn't been determined for either victim Thursday, Clayton said.

Although he couldn't say whether the case was a murder-suicide, Clayton said police weren't looking for suspects.

The home is owned by Daniel and Doreen Powell, according to Wake County tax records.

Neighbors said that Doreen Powell recently recently finished a tour of duty in Iraq with the National Guard. The couple have several grandchildren who played with other children in the neighborhood, according to neighbors.

"They've lived over there 12, 14 years. They both worked for the Post Office. They're a real nice couple," said David Lowe, who lives across the street.

The home was taped off for several hours Thursday as investigators processed the scene. Police also blocked access to Whithorne Drive for a while.

Police had been called to the home in the past, Clayton said, but he couldn't provide details on those calls.
