Man wanted for beating ex-girlfriend surrenders
A Hope Mills man wanted for nearly beating his ex-girlfriend to death has been caught, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office announced Saturday.

John Willie McKoy, 28, of 5504 N.C. Highway 87 South, surrendered to homicide detectives Saturday afternoon. McKoy faces charges of first-degree burglary and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Investigators said that McKoy kicked in the front door of his ex-girlfriend's Elcar Street home around 3 a.m. Over a half-hour, he beat, choked and stabbed the woman, detectives alleged.
She remained in serious condition at a local hospital on Saturday afternoon. Investigators withheld her identity and the name of the hospital to protect the victim's identity.
McKoy was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $75,000 secured bond Saturday afternoon. His first court appearance was set for Monday afternoon.
Court records show that McKoy has been detained in the Cumberland County Detention Center 28 times.
He was placed on probation after being convicted of assault on a female in June 2006. He also served seven months in jail in 2000 for violating probation for three incidents of breaking-and-entering in 1997.
